Final Remix Proposal-Bonnie Given

For my final remix project, I have decided to focus on a theme in Cory Doctorow’s Little Brother that I believe is a fundamental aspect of his story, the relationship between his characters, and one of the most clearest and present themes throughout his novel. This theme is the concept of how individuals behave and relate to one another during times of chaos. In Little Brother, the bombing of the bridge and the killing of many of the city’s citizens caused the people in the city to act very differently than they would in normal circumstances. I believe that this change in attitude and behavior is a very interesting one to focus in on and I would like to analyze them carefully for my project. There are a few main ideas that I believe are important to consider.

First, during times of chaos, I believe it is important to show and describe how society as a whole (especially in Little Brother) becomes incredibly fearful of the youth. In Little Brother, the youth were outcast by much of their community and were seen as a population that couldn’t be trusted at all. In fact, they were viewed as incredibly dangerous. Continuing on, I would like to also consider how during times of chaos, people fight to protect themselves on an individual basis and try to fight those they love as well. However, it is equally important to me that I show that many individuals become distrustful of their loved ones and those who are close to them. In Little Brother, it seemed as though many people didn’t know who to trust, who to hate, and so on. This leads to a further complication of chaotic times, which is how the child and parent may miscommunicate and have serious problems at home. In the novel, Marcus and his dad couldn’t agree on government control and their different opinions caused their relationship to suffer. I would also like to focus on how chaotic times lead certain groups to rise up and fight for their rights. Specifically, I think it’s crucial to show how the youth fights for their right against government action and control during difficult circumstances. Finally, I plan on tuning into how, during times of incredible trouble for a communit,y (or country), there is a major discrepancy between fighting for one’s individual rights and gaining individual power and obeying authority when a community is in mass chaos and the government and other sources of power are trying to strip people of their individuality and rights.

I plan on creating a long poem for part of my remix project. I don’t think that it will rhyme but I am confident in my ability to convey a dramatic message through poetry, as long as I have enough time to do so. I think I will put my poem as one of the first or second pages of the websites and have links from the poem  (on certain dramatic and important words) that lead out to other pages that I want to focus on and describe in more detail. However, I plan on making most of the writing be in the poem itself. I also think it would be interesting to have a few pages dedicated to pictures and youtube videos that relate to the various subjects that I describe in my poem. Hopefully, I can execute this project successfully while also making my site as user friendly as it can be. I think that my idea so far is a good starting out point and I am excited to see where this project takes me.

Redesign of final website

Here is a link to my website. http://webpages.scu.edu/ftp/BGiven/phypertext.htm
The response to the redesign prompt can be found on the the homepage under "Inspirations for this Site."
Redesign and Inspirations:
This assignment was a very long and difficult process for me. It took me a while to learn the basics of Dreamweaver and I had to make use of the lab times. I made several key adjustments to my first draft and now my website has a clean, finished look. Although it felt like a never-ending process, I learned a lot about the basics of website creation along the way and I know I made good use of the sources available to me. It didn’t come easy, but I feel like I have a whole knew branch of knowledge of website design and production.
My first draft of my website was very basic, with simple text and plain colors. I used the Dreamweaver font applications for the body text of my site because I wanted my information to be simple and readable. In my redesign, I used cooltexts.com for my headlines and this addition alone made my website more exciting. After this, I bolded the important subsets of my website on my navigation bar and made the colors of my site brighter. I also re-linked my picture citations to the websites that they came off of so that the reader would be able to read more about the information affiliated with the picture and not just be directed to google images.
There were many sites that I got inspiration from during the creation of my site. The first, L/Studio seemed very clean with simple font. I decided to use this in my own site so my viewers could easily navigate through it and I also made use of the top navigation bar like this site did. The second site I gained inspiration from was Twitter. Twitter is a very popular site and, obviously, there is something alluring about its design because it has so many viewers. After viewing Twitter, I decided I wanted to replicate its use of a fun and bold headline and this is when I decided to use cool texts. The next site I looked at was Design bombs. Although this site was much more creative and unique than mine, it gave me inspiration to add just a bit more personality to my site and make it a little less basic. If I had the time, I would want my site to look like the examples shown on Design bombs. Another site I got inspiration from was html5gallery. This site made me feel more comfortable about my own because its design was a little more simple and manageable.. The final site I gained inspiration from was the 10 Unusual Places to Get Inspiration From site. The s ection I focused on most was getting inspiration from stepping outside of the box and not forcing creative ideas. When I stopped trying to think of how to better my site, my mind relaxed more and I was able to think of special and personal additions to add, such as the dialogue near the headers and the interview with my brother, Sam.
Overall, I am pleased with my site and feel that I worked hard to make the finished product. I am excited to have it be published and to view my peers work as well.
